Air travel has become a vital mode of transportation in modern times. However, passengers often face difficulties when flights are delayed or cancelled.
But did you know that if an airline company is responsible for the delay or cancellation, it may be liable to pay compensation to affected passengers?
Here are some important rules set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for airlines regarding flight rescheduling and passenger compensation:
DGCA Rules on Flight Rescheduling and Passenger Compensation
- If an airline company reschedules a flight, it must inform passengers at least 24 hours in advance. The company must also arrange an alternative flight or offer a refund.
- If a flight is delayed by more than 4 hours, the airline must provide free food and drink to passengers.
- If a flight is delayed by more than 24 hours, the airline must provide free hotel accommodation to passengers.

- Compensation for missed connecting flights or other expenses incurred due to the delay or cancellation
- Refund of ticket price or rebooking of the flight

Passengers affected by delayed or cancelled flights can benefit from above.
Penalty for Missed Flights Due to Airline Negligence
If a passenger misses their flight due to an airline’s negligence, they may be liable to pay a fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
Lodge Complaints Against Airlines
Passengers can lodge complaints against airlines on the AirSewa portal. The portal provides a user-friendly interface for filing and tracking complaints related to air travel. Passengers can also use the portal to get information on flight schedules, baggage allowance, and other related issues.
