In a move that has left the general public reeling amid the intensifying heat, the government has implemented a significant increase in electricity prices, taking effect from today.
The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PESRC) has announced a surge in electricity rates for different customer categories. The revised rates, which range from 25 to 80 paise per unit, came into effect on May 16.
However, domestic customers have been assured that they will not be directly affected by the tariff hike. Nonetheless, their electricity bills are expected to increase by Rs 200 to 300 compared to previous periods.
While the government continues to provide free electricity to farmers, domestic users, and agricultural customers, the burden of the tariff increase will be shouldered by the Punjab government.
Under the current scheme, domestic customers in Punjab enjoy free electricity up to 300 units per month. However, those consuming more than 300 units will now experience the impact of the increased rates.
Opposition parties have expressed their strong opposition to the decision, particularly highlighting the timing of the tariff hike, which coincided with the recent victory of the AAP government in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll.
The PESRC has increased the electricity rate for 2 KW domestic customers from Rs 3.49 to Rs 4.19 per unit for usage up to 100 units.
Moreover, for consumption ranging from 101 to 300 units, the new rate will be Rs 6.64 per unit, while usage exceeding 300 units will be charged at Rs 7.75 per unit.
Additionally, there has been a fixed charge increment of Rs 15 per kilowatt, making electricity expenditure even more costly than before.
