Cybercriminals are employing this deceptive method to steal sensitive data from unsuspecting smartphone and laptop users, potentially leading to severe financial losses.
Understanding the Juice Jacking Scam:
The Juice Jacking scam involves cybercriminals setting up malware-laden software or hardware on public charging stations, commonly found in places like airports, railway stations, and crowded areas.
These malicious actors may even label the charging stations as “free charging” to lure more users.
The Modus Operandi:
Once an individual connects their device to the compromised charging station using a USB cable, the installed malware swiftly steals personal data, including passwords, photos, and crucial banking information from the connected device.
Protecting Yourself Against Juice Jacking:
To safeguard against falling victim to the Juice Jacking scam, the RBI advises the following measures:
- Avoid Public Charging Stations: Refrain from charging your phone at public places, especially in free charging stations at crowded areas.
- Carry a Personal Powerbank: If your device frequently runs out of battery, consider carrying a personal power bank to avoid using public charging stations.
- Avoid Public Wi-Fi: Be cautious while using public Wi-Fi networks, as they can also be vulnerable to cyber attacks.
- Keep Devices Updated: Ensure that your phone is running on the latest operating system to minimize security vulnerabilities.
- Install Malware Detection App: Adding a reputable malware detection app on your phone can provide an extra layer of security against potential threats.
