People traveling from Terminal 2 (T2) at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will soon experience a new service.
When they go through the security check before getting on the plane, they won’t need to take out their personal electronic devices like phones, laptops, watches, and chargers from their bags.
Currently, the testing of CTX machines is happening, and this change will start at the gates for domestic flights.
The CTX machines will work together with the Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS).
Passengers won’t have to separate their electronic devices into a tray during the security check because security officials can inspect everything using the CTX machines.
These new machines will allow operators to rotate the view and check the contents of a bag, reducing the need for additional checks and physical inspections.
This system will let passengers keep their electronic items and LAG (Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels) in their bags.
It will make the security screening process faster at checkpoints, reducing the time it takes and speeding up the process of getting off the plane.
This change will also decrease touchpoints and increase cleanliness.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has made it a rule that all major airports handling more than 50 lakh passengers must install 3D CTX machines for cabin checks by the end of this year.
Terminal 2, also called ‘a terminal in the garden,’ was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022.
Domestic flights started operating in T2 on January 15, 2023, and international flights began on September 12.
While Terminal 1 (T1) serves domestic flights, Terminal 2 is only for international carriers and hosts domestic flights for AirAsia, Air India, Star Air, and Vistara.
The estimated construction cost of the first phase of Terminal 2 is around Rs 13,000 crore, covering an area of approximately 2.5 lakh square meters, with an additional 4.41 lakh square meters planned for the second phase.
