NCDRC Penalizes Canara Bank for deficiencies in Consumer Services

Many people deal with banks, and sometimes they feel disappointed. Customers can get upset when banks don’t provide good service.

In a similar situation, Canara Bank, a government bank, has to pay a lot of money in damages, worth lakhs of rupees.

Damages more than Rs 9 lakh

In this situation, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, called NCDRC, told Canara Bank to pay money for the mistake.

NCDRC says that in this case, Canara Bank didn’t give good service to the customer and did unfair business.

Now, Canara Bank has to give Rs 9.09 lakh to the customer as compensation.

This customer service issue

This story is about a 95-year-old customer, Swaran Singh Saggu, who lives outside India.

According to the order from NCDRC, Swaran Singh opened a special account in Canara Bank and put money in a Fixed Deposit (FD).

The money in this account was supposed to be available on a certain date.

Customers wanted to take out their money from this account and send it to their bank in the UK. They gave all the needed information to the bank.

The bank made a mistake here

But, the bank took a long time to send the money even after the customer asked many times and visited the bank. The bank said it couldn’t find the right file.

NCDRC thinks the bank’s reason for the delay doesn’t make sense, and it looks like the bank didn’t do its job properly for the NRI customer.

High Court had to intervene

The decision says that Canara Bank took out the money from the special account without telling the NRI customer.

The bank didn’t give the needed information to the customer. After that, Canara Bank didn’t send the money to the NRI’s other account in India until the High Court said it had to.

NCDRC increased the amount

The customer complained about Canara Bank using the Consumer Protection Act.

The State Consumer Commission agreed with the customer and told the bank to pay for the loss.

The State Commission said the bank should pay Rs 5,09,288 as compensation. NCDRC increased the compensation amount to Rs 5.09 lakh.
