Karnataka Govt to launch Ride-Hailing App to Address Driver Concerns

The Karnataka government has taken a significant step by announcing the development of its own ride-hailing app, similar to Uber and Ola.

The decision comes after a grievance meeting with taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers, who have been facing issues with private aggregators.

Addressing Driver Exploitation

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy expressed his commitment to tackle the concerns raised by drivers.

He shared incidents where drivers were being exploited by app-based aggregators, receiving only a fraction of the fare paid by passengers.

Reddy highlighted the need for an app that ensures fair treatment and compensation for drivers.

Kerala’s Example

Following in Kerala’s footsteps, the Karnataka government aims to provide an alternative ride-hailing solution through their own app.

Kerala previously launched the ‘Kerala Savari’ app as an alternative to Uber and Ola, but it didn’t gain much traction.

However, Bengaluru’s Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union (ARDU) found success with the ‘Namma Yatri’ app, supported by Juspay Technologies and Beacon Foundation.

Plans for Drivers’ Convenience

The government plans to set up auto stands at metro stations to enhance drivers’ convenience.

Discussions with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRC) are underway to make this a reality.

Additionally, the government will explore the idea of specific auto stands across the city in coordination with the police.

Other Promised Initiatives

Reddy assured the drivers that their demands are being heard.

Among the considerations are a potential ban on bike taxis (which is currently pending in court),

insurance coverage for drivers, housing facilities, educational support for drivers’ children, celebrating Drivers Day,

implementing uniform cab fares to the airport, road connectivity for buses, and online tourist permits with reduced taxes.

In conclusion, the Karnataka government’s move to launch its own ride-hailing app is a significant step toward addressing driver concerns and providing a viable alternative to existing private aggregators.
