A recent report sheds light on the growing gig worker community in India and their struggle to receive fair compensation and minimum benefits.
According to the Fairwork India Ratings 2023 report, only three out of twelve Indian companies are complying with minimum wage regulations for gig workers.
Leaders in Minimum Wage Compliance
The latest Fairwork India Ratings 2023 report, the fifth edition of its kind, assesses the working conditions of gig and platform workers across digital labor platforms in the country.
Among the companies evaluated, only Big Basket, Flipkart, and Urban Company have consistently upheld the minimum wage standards for gig workers for the second consecutive year.
Five Fairwork Principles
The report, conducted by the Center for Information Technology and Public Policy (CITAPP), in collaboration with the International Institute of Fairwork India
and the Oxford Internet Institute of Oxford University, evaluated twelve platforms based on five core principles:
1) Fair Play
2) Fair Conditions
3) Fair Contracts
4) Fair Management
5) Fair Representation
Mixed Scores and Limited Coverage
Notably, none of the twelve assessed companies scored higher than 6 out of 10, and none fully met all five fairwork principles.
Companies like Amazon, Flex, BigBasket, BlueSmart, Flipkart, Swiggy, Urban Company, Uber, Zepto, and Zomato provide favorable working conditions for gig workers, including safety equipment.
Accidental Coverage Highlights
Among these platforms, Swiggy, Zomato, Urban Company, Zepto, and Big Basket stand out for offering accidental coverage to their gig workers at no additional cost.
Additionally, they provide monetary compensation to workers who can’t work due to medical reasons, ensuring income security for gig workers.
