In a recent announcement, WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature called “Channels.” If this sounds familiar, you may be reminded of Telegram’s ‘Channel’ feature.
Similar to Telegram, WhatsApp Channels offer a broadcast feature that enables individuals and organizations to share information and updates on topics of interest with their followers.
The launch of the channel feature will initially take place in Colombia and Singapore, with plans to expand to other countries, including India, in the coming months.
What are WhatsApp Channels?
WhatsApp describes Channels as a simple, reliable, and private means of receiving important updates.
Channels will now be accessible via a dedicated tab called “Update,” where users can view the statuses and channels they follow.
What can be shared on Channels?
WhatsApp allows one-way communication through channels. Admins will have the ability to send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to their followers.
To facilitate easy access, WhatsApp is also developing a directory where users can search for their favorite channels. Additionally, channels can be linked externally.
Privacy of Admins and Followers
WhatsApp aims to make the Channel feature the most private broadcasting service worldwide.
Both the admin’s phone number and profile photo will remain hidden from followers.
Similarly, when you follow a channel, the admin and other followers will not be able to see
your phone number. Users have complete control over which channels they choose to follow.
30-Day Channel History Storage
WhatsApp will store the history of each channel on its server for a period of 30 days.
Methods will be introduced to allow followers to swiftly remove updates received from channels.
Admins will have the ability to block screenshots and prevent message forwarding from their channels.
Create Your Own Channel
WhatsApp emphasizes that anyone can create their own channel. Admins will have the authority to determine who can follow their channel.
Additionally, WhatsApp will introduce a directory search feature, enabling users to discover channels relevant to their interests.
The channel feature is expected to be well-received by WhatsApp users.
