New Delhi: According to reports, Samsung has implemented a ban on the usage of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT not only on company-owned devices but also on non-company-owned devices operating on internal networks.
As per TechCrunch’s report, Samsung has taken this step following a data breach incident last month, where confidential information from the company was mistakenly shared with ChatGPT.
As per earlier reports, Samsung’s semiconductor division allowed engineers to use ChatGPT, which led to employees unintentionally leaking confidential information at least three times.
In response, Samsung has banned ChatGPT, as well as other AI services such as Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard on all company-owned computers, tablets, and phones.
The restriction on the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT on Samsung devices would only be applicable to devices issued by the company to its employees.
Consumers and other individuals who own Samsung phones, laptops, and other connected devices would not be affected by this rule.
Samsung has not yet responded to the report. However, according to a memo obtained by Bloomberg, the ban is temporary and will remain in place until the company implements security measures to ensure a secure environment for using generative AI tools safely, thus enhancing employees’ productivity and efficiency.
Following the data breach incident, Samsung also requested its employees who use generative AI tools outside the company not to share any company-related or personal information that could potentially expose its intellectual property, according to the memo.
ChatGPT’s data policy indicates that unless users explicitly decline, it uses their prompts to train its models.
Additionally, Samsung is reportedly developing its own in-house AI tools for software development and translation purposes.
