RBI extends Deadline for Exchange of Rs 2000 Notes until October 7, 2023

On Saturday, there was good news from the Reserve Bank of India. They have given people more time to exchange 2000 rupee notes.

If you haven’t exchanged your 2000 rupee notes yet, you can do it until October 7, 2023.

This means you have an extra week. The previous deadline was September 30, which was last Saturday.

You can change notes until October 7

The Reserve Bank has shared important information. Starting from October 8, regular people won’t be able to exchange 2000 rupee notes at banks and post offices.

But don’t worry, these notes will still be used, and you can exchange them at the RBI office only.

To avoid any trouble, make sure to exchange them before the deadline.

What will happen to the notes after the deadline?

The Reserve Bank of India wants you to know that even after October 7, you can still swap these notes.

You won’t be able to do it at regular banks or post offices, but you can exchange them at 19 RBI offices located throughout the country.

You can exchange notes up to Rs 20,000 at one time in these offices. To do this, you’ll need to provide an ID proof.

Additionally, the Central Bank has stated that even after the deadline passes for exchanging Rs 2000 notes, these notes will still be accepted as legal currency.

Many notes have been returned to the banking system

It’s important to mention that on May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes.

According to the data provided by the bank, as of May 19, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation across the country.

However, by September 29, 2023, a total of Rs 2000 notes amounting to Rs 3.42 lakh crore have been returned to the banking system. There is still Rs 14,000 crore yet to be returned.

You can also send money by mail

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced on Saturday that, for customers’ convenience, they can send Rs 2000 notes through the postal service to 19 RBI offices.

The money will be deposited into the customers’ accounts afterward, but it’s essential to include an ID proof along with the notes when sending them.
