PhonePe launches Indus Appstore to Challenge Google and Apple

PhonePe is set to disrupt the dominance of Google and Apple App Stores with the launch of Indus Appstore for Android users.

The move aims to address long-standing accusations that Google and Apple prioritize their own apps within their stores. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about PhonePe’s Indus App Store:

Indus App Fees

Initially, Indus App will be entirely free for Android users. No fees will be charged for the first year of use.

After this initial period, users may have the option to continue using the Indus App for a nominal fee.

No Fees for Developers

Unlike Google and Apple’s app stores, Indus Appstore will not impose platform fees or commissions on developers for in-app payments.

Developers will have the freedom to integrate their preferred payment gateways within their apps.

This is a significant departure from the 30% commission levied by Google and Apple, which has faced criticism.

Expanding Access

With a projected 1 billion smartphone users in India by 2026, predominantly using Android phones, PhonePe is gearing up to launch Indus App in 12 Indian languages.

The platform will include a dedicated ‘Launch Pad’ section to enhance the visibility and searchability of new apps in the Appstore.

Additionally, developers will have access to various tools and features to address common challenges, including round-the-clock customer support based in India and the option to list apps in 12 Indian languages alongside English.

This move by PhonePe marks a significant step towards providing a more open and accessible platform for both users and developers in the Indian app ecosystem.
