New Delhi: Aadhaar card is now one of the most important documents required by citizens to get benefits from various schemes sponsored by the state.

It is also demanded by numerous private and public agencies to offer services such as KYC.

The most frequently asked query is what happens if you are an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) and can apply for an Aadhaar card or not?

As per the UIDAI Aadhaar FAQ, it is indeed YES. An NRI (whether either a minor or an adult) who has an active Indian Passport may apply for Aadhaar at the nearest Aadhaar Kendra.

UIDAI also provides the steps to be taken if an NRI would like to apply for an Aadhaar card.

The process involves:

Visit your local Aadhaar Kendra or any ASK at your convenience.

It would help if you had an original Indian Passport with you

Input the required information on the enrollment form.

NRI must provide the Email ID

The declaration required for NRI enrollment may differ slightly. Sign and read the statement on your enrolment form

Request the operator to register you as an NRI

Provide your Passport as Proof of Identification

Complete the process of biometric capture

Ensure you have all the information on display (in English and the local language) before you permit the operator to submit your data.

Get the acknowledgment slip or enrollment slip with the 14-digit ID for Enrolment as well as the Date & Time Stamp.

Once you are enrolled, you can check the status of your Aadhaar from: https://resident.uidai.gov.in/check-aadhaar. UIDAI states that you can use your Passport as proof of the Address and date of birth or present a different acceptable document to prove this.

However, suppose the Address you entered in the Passport has been changed to a different one.

In that case, you must provide the latest Indian Address with valid evidence of Address (PoA) under the list of acceptable documents by UIDAI.
