New SIM Card Rules Effective from today (KYC Process)

Starting today, which is December 1, 2023, there are new rules for SIM cards set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

It’s really important for people using mobile phones to understand these rules. The government made these rules to stop online fraud.

Here are the new rules for buying a new SIM card

1) When you buy a new SIM card, you need to update your KYC (Know Your Customer) information.

This means giving your personal details and getting checked by the SIM card seller.

2) If you want a new mobile number, you can only get it 90 days after the old one was disconnected. You can’t buy a lot of SIM cards at once to stop scams.

3) There are fines for sellers who didn’t register by November 30. They might have to pay up to Rs 10 lakh and could even go to jail.

4) There’s a limit on how many SIM cards you can get. Regular people can have up to 9 SIM cards on one ID, but if you need more, you have to use a business connection.

5) After a SIM card is turned off, you have to wait for 90 days before someone else can use that number.

6) If you want to sell SIM cards, you need to get verified. SIM card dealers must register and go through a check.

7) Telecom operators are in charge of making sure they follow the rules. Not following the rules might mean a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

When you get a new SIM card for your old number, you need to give your Aadhaar and other personal details.
