After the Modi government came to power, the number of households using LPG for cooking has increased significantly.
Now, a new report from the Energy Transition Committee of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has recommended that the government reintroduce subsidies on LPG cylinders.
According to sources, the government is considering a plan to provide subsidies on seven to eight cylinders annually, which is expected to bring significant relief to millions of households in the country.
Since the launch of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ in 2016, the Modi government has provided LPG connections to 9.5 crore low-income families. Today, LPG is being used in 30 crore households across the country.
Previously, the government provided subsidies on 12 cylinders annually. However, due to the high cost of LPG, 85 percent of the households were unable to fully utilize it for cooking.
As a result, the new proposal suggests providing subsidies on eight cylinders, which is expected to reduce the total amount of government subsidies by 13 to 15 percent.
The report suggests that leaving subsidies for the rich will continue as before. Additionally, families consuming three cylinders annually will be given more subsidy than those taking four to seven cylinders.
It is worth noting that even today, three-fourths of families in the country do not have LPG connections, and their monthly income is less than Rs 10,000.
In conclusion, the proposed reintroduction of LPG subsidies by the Modi government is expected to provide much-needed relief to millions of Indian households.
With the government likely to take a decision soon, people are eagerly awaiting the outcome.
