MG to make Low-Cost Electric Car in Gujarat with Rs 800 Cr Investment

On April 26, MG is scheduled to unveil its latest electric vehicle, the Comet EV.

Urban EV

This marks MG’s second fully electric vehicle launch in India and also introduces its smallest electric car to the market.

MG’s Comet EV, a two-door compact car, will compete with the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3 in the urban electric vehicle segment.

Platform

The Comet EV is essentially a rebranded version of the Wuling Air EV, which is available in Indonesia and built on SAIC’s GSEV platform.

This electric platform will also be used for the upcoming electric SUV version of the Comet, called the Baojun Yep SUV, which boasts boxy proportions and a high ground clearance.

The Baojun Yep SUV is expected to launch in India in 2025.

Dimensions

With a length of 2,974mm, a width of 1,505mm, a height of 1,631mm, and a wheelbase of 2,010mm, the Comet EV will be smaller in size compared to its direct competitor, the Tiago EV.

Exterior

The Comet EV is anticipated to come equipped with 12-inch alloy wheels, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, McPherson Struts on the front, and a multi-link coil suspension at the rear.

Interior

As previously hinted, the Comet EV will feature a dual 10.25-inch infotainment screen layout, making it the first mass-market electric vehicle to offer this feature.

Additional interior highlights of the Comet EV include a two-spoke steering wheel with controls inspired by Apple’s iPod, a four-seater layout, and the inherent space and packaging benefits of electric vehicles designed from the ground up.

The Comet EV is likely to come with a range of features, including connected car technology, an electric parking brake, hill-start assist, keyless entry and start, various drive modes, and voice commands.

Battery

Reports suggest that the Comet EV will be available with only one battery pack option, which is a 17.3 kWh unit capable of providing a range of 230 km on a full charge.

The car is also expected to feature a single PMS motor capable of delivering 41.4 hp and 110 Nm of torque.

Charging

Charging the Comet EV with a 3.3 kW charger is estimated to take 7 hours for a full charge from 0 to 100 percent and 5 hours for a charge from 10 to 80 percent.

However, it is not expected that the Comet EV will feature fast-charging capability.

Price

The expected price range of the Comet EV is between Rs 10 lakh and 12 lakh.

To provide a comparison, the Tata Tiago EV is priced between Rs 8.69 lakh and 11.99 lakh, whereas the Citroen eC3 is priced between Rs 11.50 lakh and 12.43 lakh.

According to reports, MG plans to assemble the Comet EV in India and achieve over 60 percent localization to keep the price competitive.

Production of the car has already commenced and MG has invested Rs 800 crore to manufacture this affordable electric vehicle in Gujarat.
