Indian Railways’ New Liquor Rules brings Trouble for Passengers

Passengers traveling by train are now facing the impact of new rules introduced by Indian Railways. The regulations regarding carrying alcohol have raised concerns among travelers.

Let’s explore the details of these rules and their implications.

State-specific Rules for Carrying Liquor on Trains

Carrying liquor on trains is subject to state-specific rules, as each state in India has its own regulations regarding alcohol.

The Constitution grants states the authority to establish their own guidelines concerning alcohol. Therefore, it is essential for passengers to familiarize themselves with the rules of the particular state they are traveling through.

Railways Prohibit Carrying Alcohol on Trains

The Indian Railways strictly prohibits passengers from carrying alcohol on trains.

The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, Deepak Kumar, emphasized that bringing alcohol on board any mode of transportation,

including trains, metros, or buses, is entirely prohibited.

Violators of this rule will face severe consequences imposed by the Railways.

Penalties and Actions

Passengers caught carrying alcohol on trains will be penalized under Section 165 of the Indian Railway Act 1989. They may face a fine of Rs 500. Additionally, if any individual is found with other prohibited items, a similar fine can be imposed.

In cases where any damage occurs due to such items, the responsible person will also be held liable for compensation.

Dry States and Tax Evasion Concerns

Several states in India, such as Bihar and Gujarat, have implemented complete alcohol bans. Travelers caught with alcohol in these states may face serious legal consequences.

Moreover, if a bottle of liquor is found open, it can lead to fines imposed by the railway authorities.

Additionally, when trains cross state boundaries, the transportation of alcohol can potentially result in tax evasion charges.

In such instances, the culprits will be handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), and the Excise Department of the respective state will take appropriate actions in accordance with the laws and regulations.
