Indian Railways has brought a glimmer of hope for train travelers by reintroducing train ticket concessions.
The concession facility, which was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will once again provide discounted fares to several passenger categories.
This decision comes in response to persistent demands from various sections of society, including senior citizens, who were previously availing concessions on train fares.
Wide Range of Concessions
The concessions on train fares extend beyond senior citizens and encompass diverse groups. Students, differently-abled individuals (Divyangs), farmers, spouses of martyrs, and award recipients are among those who will benefit from discounted fares.
While the concession for senior citizens was put on hold during the pandemic, there have been discussions in Parliament to reinstate the facility.
Reinstating the Benefits
The Railways acknowledges the importance of concessions and is considering reinstating the fare discounts for senior citizens. Previously, these discounts were granted to women at a rate of 50% and to men at 40% for travel across all classes.
Women became eligible for the concession at the age of 58, while men could avail it at 60. The Railways is now actively working on restoring these concessions, providing much-needed relief to senior citizens.
Discounts for Students
Indian Railways also extends benefits to students. Girls can travel free of cost in second class from MST (Monthly Season Ticket) until graduation, while boys can travel for free until class 12th. This concession also includes students from madrassas.
Additionally, general category students are eligible for a 50% discount on second and sleeper class fares.
The Future of Concessions
While concessions for senior citizens were temporarily halted due to the pandemic, the Railways has assured passengers that these benefits are likely to be reinstated in the near future.
The resumption of these concessions will once again provide affordable travel options and support various segments of society in their train journeys.
