Govt warns issues regarding scams related to Aadhaar card

UIDAI, the agency responsible for Aadhaar cards, has issued a cautionary notice about scams targeting Aadhaar card holders.

The agency emphasizes that sharing Aadhaar card numbers through email or WhatsApp should be avoided.

In a recent message on X (formerly Twitter), UIDAI clarified that the government never employs email or WhatsApp for Aadhaar updates.

Important documents like Proof of Identity (POI) or Proof of Address (POA) are never requested through these channels.

Surge in Aadhaar Card Scams

There has been a notable increase in scams related to Aadhaar cards, as per government advisories.

Scammers are requesting Aadhaar numbers from unsuspecting individuals.

Given that Aadhaar numbers are sensitive and signify Indian citizenship, fraudsters can exploit them for deceitful activities.

Various Avenues for Scams

Scammers have multiple ways to manipulate Aadhaar cards.

They can pilfer physical cards, create counterfeit ones, or even breach the UIDAI database to access personal information.

Securing through QR Code Verification

To thwart such scams, the government urges citizens to exercise caution and avoid sharing their Aadhaar details.

Additionally, they recommend verifying Aadhaar authenticity through the QR code found on the card.

Verifying Aadhaar through QR Code

Follow these steps to verify Aadhaar using the QR code:

Download the mAadhaar app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Launch the app and select “Verify Aadhaar.”

Use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code on your Aadhaar card, e-Aadhaar, or Aadhaar PVC.

The app will process the QR code and display the Aadhaar holder’s details.

Confirm the information and tap “Verify.”

Taking Action Against Compromise

If you suspect your Aadhaar has been compromised, promptly notify UIDAI. Reach out by calling their helpline at 1947 or filing a complaint online at uidai.gov.in.

Government’s Call for Safety

The government strongly advises citizens to safeguard their Aadhaar information.

Secure channels like myAadhaarPortal, mAadhaarApp, and official UIDAI social media accounts are recommended for updates and interactions.
