New Delhi :
If you frequently travel by car on highways, here’s some good news for you. The government is set to introduce a barrier-less toll collection system, reducing your time spent at toll booths significantly.
Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, VK Singh, announced on Wednesday that the system is currently being tested and will be implemented soon.
Under the new scheme, drivers won’t need to wait even for half a minute at toll booths.
The toll payment will be based on the distance traveled, leading to increased efficiency and reduced travel time.
With the current use of FASTag, the time taken at toll booths has already decreased to 47 seconds, but the government aims to further reduce it to less than 30 seconds.
Testing for this innovative system is underway on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, where satellite and camera-based technology is being employed.
As vehicles enter the highway, the installed camera scans their registration numbers to determine the distance traveled, making toll payment more accurate and efficient.
Unlike the current system, where tolls are fixed irrespective of distance traveled, the new system will ensure fair payment based on actual usage.
The progress achieved in various sectors, including telecommunications, has been instrumental in making this technological advancement possible.
The improvement in the telecommunication network aids in efficiently collecting vehicle data at toll plazas.
