In a recent announcement, additional restrictions have been unveiled for the National Capital Region (NCR), set to be implemented soon.
A significant measure to combat pollution in the region involves the complete ban on diesel generators starting from October 1.
While pollution levels in the capital and NCR tend to be higher than normal throughout the year, the winter season witnesses the peak of this issue.
Diesel generators have been identified as a major contributor to pollution, prompting authorities to emphasize their reduction or discontinuation since the introduction of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
To address this concern, the Central Air Quality Management Commission has now decided to enforce a comprehensive ban on the usage of diesel generator sets effective October 1.
However, it’s worth noting that generator sets operating on clean fuels and those equipped with dual-mode capabilities have been granted exemptions subject to certain conditions.
Furthermore, large capacity generators adhering to new standards have also been exempted from the ban.
The following six categories will receive exemptions:
1) Generators running on LPG, natural gas, biogas, propane, and butane will not be subjected to the ban.
2) Portable generators below a certain kilowatt threshold will not face any restrictions, except during specific periods as outlined in the GRAP.
3) Dual fuel mode generators ranging from 19 KW to 125 KW will be permitted to operate for a maximum of two hours during the GRAP period.
4) Dual fuel mode or retrofitted generators falling within the 125 KW to 800 KW range will not face any restrictions.
5) Generators with a capacity of 800 KW and above, equipped with dual fuel mode or any other emission control device, will only be subject to the time restrictions specified in the GRAP. They will be allowed to operate for a maximum of two hours during the designated period.
6) According to the new regulations, generators up to 800 KW manufactured under the specified norms will not be subjected to any restrictions.
By implementing these measures, authorities aim to curb pollution levels and improve the air quality in the NCR.
