Due to the increase in the number of COVID-infected patients in India, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) has declared that lawyers can now work remotely from their homes.
As of Wednesday, the total number of COVID-infected patients has risen to 4,435.
As COVID Infections Surge, Supreme Court To Adopt Hybrid Working Mode
Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud acknowledged the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the country on Wednesday and announced that the Supreme Court is available to hear lawyers through video conferencing.
In reaction to recent news coverage, Chief Justice of India and Justice J. B. Pardiwala, serving as a panel, declared that the court is ready to permit lawyers to appear through the hybrid mode.
According to CJI Chandrachud, “We noticed the news articles about the increasing Covid cases. Attorneys can use the hybrid mode.
If you opt to appear online, we will listen to you. We can also hear you via video conferencing.”
Taking into account the low incidence of infection and the number of Covid cases in Delhi and throughout the country, the Supreme Court determined to resume conducting hearings through physical means starting from April 4, 2022.
Supreme Court’s Experiments With Hybrid Hearing Method
The Supreme Court has been testing the hybrid hearing approach, which combines in-person and virtual hearings, for some time.
Even after physical hearings resumed, the Supreme Court began broadcasting the Constitution bench proceedings live through the Supreme Court app and YouTube.
As per information provided by the Union health ministry, India recorded 4,435 fresh COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, marking the highest daily surge in 163 days (equivalent to five months and 13 days), as the number of active cases climbed to 23,091.
The fresh cases resulted in India’s COVID-19 cumulative count rising to 4.47 billion (4,47,33,719).
As per the report, 15 fatalities pushed the overall death count to 5,30,916.
Over the past few days, India has seen a rise in Covid cases, with daily new infections fluctuating between 2,994 on April 1 and 3,824 on April 2, and 3,641 on April 3, before slightly dropping to 3038 on Tuesday.
