In a recent update, the government is set to alter the way laptops, tablets, and personal computers are imported starting November 1.
Instead of the existing licensing process, an import authorization process will be introduced, according to sources.
However, final approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is still pending, as reported by the Commerce Ministry.
Import Restrictions from November 1
The government had previously imposed import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and computers in an effort to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce imports from countries like China.
These restrictions are scheduled to take effect from November 1, as per the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a body under the Ministry of Commerce. These measures have raised concerns within the IT hardware industry.
Transition to Import Management System
Rather than issuing import licenses, the government is preparing to implement an import management system.
This system will involve granting import approval letters to businesses. Interested companies can then apply for authorization to import a specific quantity of these devices.
It’s worth noting that DGFT might also issue further clarifications regarding the earlier notification from August 3, which initially proposed a licensing system for imports.
