Ban on Sale of Seat Belt Clips: Not wearing a seat belt while traveling by car in India is a leading cause of fatalities in road accidents.
A government report revealed that the number of deaths in 2021 exceeded 16,000.
Despite this alarming statistic, many drivers and passengers continue to neglect the use of seat belts.
In response to this issue, some companies have introduced alarm systems to remind individuals to wear their seat belts in vehicles.
Unfortunately, some people choose to forgo wearing seat belts altogether, making their journeys even riskier.
To silence the seat belt alarm, they opt for seat belt clips and alarm stoppers, which are widely sold by various online e-commerce companies.
In light of this situation, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued an order prohibiting five major e-commerce platforms in India from selling seat belt alarm stopper clips.
This measure aims to safeguard the lives and well-being of customers who purchase these items.
Additionally, the sale of counterfeit seat belt clips is a direct violation of the Consumer Protection Act of 2019.
The order was prompted by the substantial sales volume of these devices on e-commerce websites.
Consequently, all five e-commerce platforms have complied with the CCPA’s order and submitted their reports.
As a result, 13,118 fake seat belt or seat belt alarm stoppers listed on these platforms have been removed.
It is important to note that besides posing a risk to life, the use of these devices can also be detrimental to customers who seek insurance claims.
Insurance companies may reject claims if they find evidence of counterfeit seat belt clips in the vehicle, citing the claimant’s negligence.
