D2M Technology to Bring TV Channels and OTT Content to Mobiles Without Internet

A groundbreaking initiative by the government is set to revolutionize mobile entertainment.

The Direct to Mobile (D2M) technology promises to enable users to watch TV channels and OTT content on their phones without the need for internet connectivity.

Spearheaded by the Central Telecom Department, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India,

and in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, this innovation is creating a buzz in the tech world.

Understanding Direct to Mobile (D2M) Technology

Direct to Mobile technology, also known as D2M Technology, functions much like the Direct to Home (D2H) technology.

It’s a fusion of two different technologies – Broadband and Broadcast.

With this technology, a receiver installed in mobile devices will capture broadcast content through radio frequencies, allowing users to view it directly on their phones.

Test and Implementation

The D2M Technology is currently undergoing testing, and experts reveal that it will utilize the 526-582 MHz band.

Once the testing phase is complete, a final decision will be made after consultations with telecom operators and other stakeholders.

Rapid Growth of Smartphone Users

With around 800 million smartphone users presently in the country, this number is expected to soar to 1 billion by 2026.

Currently, users rely on the internet for audio-video content and OTT apps for entertainment.

The introduction of D2M Technology is poised to be a game-changer for both users and telecom companies.

Telecom Companies’ Concerns

While the D2M Technology holds great promise for consumers, it has encountered opposition from several telecom companies.

They fear that this implementation might lead to a reduction in internet usage, thereby affecting their revenue streams.
