Central Govt to Replace Minimum Wage with Living Wage System

The Government is getting ready to change how workers get paid in the country.

Instead of having a minimum wage, they want to introduce something called a living wage starting next year.

This living wage is the least amount of money a worker needs to cover their basic needs like a place to live, food, healthcare, education, and clothes.

They’ve asked for help from an international organization called the International Labour Organization (ILO) to set up this new system.

They say this living wage will be more than what workers currently get as a minimum wage.

The decision about minimum wage changes was made in a meeting of the ILO in Geneva on March 14th.

In India, there are more than 500 million workers, and 90% of them work in places that aren’t well organized.

Right now, they usually earn at least 176 rupees a day, depending on which state they work in. But, since 2017, there hasn’t been any national change to this minimum wage.

This doesn’t force states to pay more, so in some places, workers earn even less.

Even though there was a law about wages passed in 2019, it hasn’t been put into action yet. This law suggests a minimum wage that all states would have to follow.
