In response to recent layoffs, Amazon has made the decision to postpone the issuance of offer letters to freshers hired through campus recruitment at prestigious Indian institutes such as IITs and NITs.
As reported by Business Today, a software engineering graduate from IIT Bombay shared that his offer letter from Amazon,
with a salary package of 30 lakhs per annum, has been delayed until January 2024.
Previously scheduled to join in June, the student received an email from HR informing him of the postponement.
Students who had interned with Amazon have also encountered similar experiences.
NIT’s placement cell has confirmed that offer letters for some students have been postponed, while others have been canceled altogether.
Responding to the matter, Amazon stated that due to challenging economic conditions, the joining dates for some students hired from colleges have been delayed by six months.
The company also expressed its commitment to supporting the affected students to minimize any financial impact during this period.
Amazon emphasized its dedication to hiring from universities and nurturing the next generation of leaders and builders.
In December 2022, The Financial Times reported a similar situation in the United States, where offer letters were postponed for a year, with the company attributing the decision to macroeconomic factors.
Amazon clarified to the students that the delay was a business decision and not personal.
Having recently laid off 27,000 employees, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described the decision as difficult but necessary.
He expressed confidence that the company would benefit from this step in the future, as stated in a letter to shareholders.
