Starting September 1, 2024, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will enforce a new rule aimed at reducing fake and spam calls.
This initiative is part of TRAI’s effort to curb unwanted telemarketing and fraudulent calls.
Stricter Regulations for Spam Callers
First Rule
Under the new TRAI regulations, organizations found making spam calls will face significant penalties.
This rule also applies to individuals using their mobile numbers for telemarketing or promotional purposes, leading to their numbers being blacklisted for the same duration.
All telecom services for these organizations will be disconnected, and they will be blacklisted by all telecom operators for two years.
This rule also applies to individuals using their mobile numbers for telemarketing; their numbers will be blacklisted for the same period.
Previously, the government introduced the unique number series 160 to prevent financial fraud, but spam calls from private numbers were still common.
The new rule addresses this issue and will be enforced for all.
Second Rule
From September 1, 2024, any message containing a URL or APK that is not pre-approved (whitelisted) will not be delivered.
This measure aims to prevent the spread of malicious content and ensure only verified links are sent to users.
