As August began, another car’s journey in the Indian market ended.
BMW has discontinued its 6 Series GT following the launch of the new 5 Series.
The new 5 Series, with its long wheelbase, has attracted both existing 5 Series and 6 Series GT customers.
The 6 Series GT, a long wheelbase version of the previous generation 5 Series, was first introduced in 2018 and received a facelift in 2021.
In FY2024, the 6 Series GT sold 1,428 units, nearly one and a half times more than the previous generation 5 Series, which sold 1,059 units.
It also outperformed popular SUVs like the BMW X3, Land Rover Defender, and Audi Q5.
BMW’s current sedan lineup in India includes the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series.
Besides the i4 sedan, the 5 Series and 7 Series are also available in electric versions.
The long-wheelbase format has been successful for BMW, as shown by models like the 3 Series Gran Limousine and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Buyers who are driven prefer extra rear space and legroom.
That’s why the new 5 Series is available only in a long-wheelbase version, to replace the 6 Series GT.
In India, the 6 Series GT comes with a choice of a 2.0-liter petrol engine producing 258hp or a 2.0-liter diesel engine with 190hp.
The new 5 Series is currently available only with a 2.0-liter petrol engine, but a diesel version will be introduced later.
Additionally, a high-performance M5 variant with a 727hp plug-in hybrid V8 engine is expected to be launched in India.
