Meta’s messaging app, WhatsApp, stopped more than 69 lakh ‘problematic accounts’ in India in December 2023.
The company shared this information to follow the new IT Rules of 2021. They took action against “69,34,000 accounts” from December 1 to 31.
WhatsApp shared in its regular report that even before users reported, they had already banned around 16,58,000 accounts.
The widely used messaging platform, with over 50 crore users in the country, got a high number of 16,366 complaint reports in December. They took “action” on 13 of them.
“When it says ‘Accounts Actioned,’ it means that WhatsApp did something about the reported issue. Taking action could be either stopping an account or allowing back an account that was stopped before.”
The company says, “This report about user safety tells you about the problems people reported and what WhatsApp did about them. It also mentions the things WhatsApp is doing to stop misuse on its platform.”
To help many social media users in India, the government has started a Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).
This committee will address the worries people have about content and other problems.
It is a new group formed to make the country’s digital rules stronger and control big tech companies.
The committee will review appeals from users who disagree with decisions made by social media platforms.
WhatsApp mentioned, “We are a top company in keeping messages private and secure from start to finish, making it hard for people to misuse.
Apart from the safety tools we have, we have a team of experts like engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and specialists in law enforcement, online security, and technology development who work together to make sure everything is safe.”
In November, WhatsApp stopped over 71 lakh problematic accounts in the country.
