The government in Delhi has decided to make the Electric Vehicle (EV) policy last for three more months.
Originally, the policy was supposed to end on Sunday, but they extended it.
This policy, which started in August 2020, aims to make 25 percent of vehicles in Delhi electric by 2024.
An official mentioned that the policy will now continue until March 31, 2024, pending approval from the Cabinet.
The Electric Vehicle Policy from 2020 initially ended on August 8, but it keeps getting extended. There’s ongoing work on a new policy, but it’s not decided when it will start.
Kailash Gehlot, the Transport Minister in Delhi, said earlier that the new Electric Vehicle Policy, known as Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, will promote ‘Retrofitting.’ This is because electric vehicles can be expensive.
Retrofitting involves adding an electric motor and battery to convert old or regular cars into electric ones.
In this process, the car’s regular engine is taken out, and an electric motor is put in its place, giving power to the wheels. A battery and charging system are also added for power.
As per the EV.Delhi.gov.in website, from August 2020 until now, 26,787 electric two-wheelers, 31,506 electric three-wheelers, 5,266 electric cars, and 323 electric buses have been sold in Delhi.
This data is from January 1, 2024, according to the Delhi EV dashboard on the website.
The website also mentions that there are 1919 charging stations and 2452 charging points in Delhi.
