Google Introduces ‘Car Crash Detection’ to Pixel Phones in India

Tech giant Google has expanded its ‘Car Crash Detection’ feature to its Pixel devices in India.

This innovative feature can automatically alert emergency services in the event of a car accident. It operates by utilizing the phone’s built-in sensors.

Safety in Accidents

Originally introduced in 2014, this feature detects accidents using the phone’s location data, motion sensors, and ambient sounds.

When an accident is detected, the phone vibrates and emits a loud sound while asking the user if they are okay. If there’s no response, the emergency services are contacted.

Global Rollout

Google has extended this feature to five new countries, including India, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, and Switzerland.

It is now accessible in a total of 20 countries, primarily on Google Pixel 4a and subsequent Pixel smartphones, though not on other devices.

How to Activate the Feature

To activate the car crash detection feature on your Google Pixel phone, follow these simple steps:

1) Open the ‘Personal Safety’ app on your device.

2) Tap on the ‘Features’ option.

3) Scroll down to find ‘Car Crash Detection’ and select ‘Set up.’

4) Grant the app permission to access location, microphone, and physical activity data.

5) Configure the app by entering your emergency contact details.

Additionally, you can save emergency service numbers in your phone to be contacted in case of an emergency.

If there’s no major accident, you will see an ‘I am safe’ alert that you can acknowledge. This feature also displays emergency information on the phone’s lock screen.
