In a bid to enhance road safety, wearing a helmet correctly has become a critical part of traffic regulations, in addition to just wearing one.
Violating this rule can now lead to fines ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. Despite the clear guidelines, many riders still neglect to wear helmets or do so incorrectly.
Here’s a quick guide on how to wear your helmet properly to ensure safety and prevent fines.
The Right Way to Wear a Helmet
Before hopping on a two-wheeler, it’s essential to wear a helmet to protect your head in case of an accident.
Head injuries are a leading cause of fatalities in accidents. Therefore, when putting on your helmet, make sure it fits snugly and secure it with the strap.
Some individuals wear helmets merely to avoid fines but neglect to fasten the strap. Furthermore, some helmets lack a functioning strap or have a broken one. In any of these situations, you could be fined.
New Rs 2,000 Fine
The Indian government, under the 1998 Motor Vehicles Act, has raised the fine for two-wheeler riders who fail to wear helmets or wear them improperly.
An immediate fine of up to Rs 2,000 will be imposed. This means that even if you wear a helmet but leave it unsecured, you can be fined Rs 1,000.
Neglecting to wear the helmet properly will also result in a Rs 1,000 fine. In essence, the helmet must be worn correctly to avoid the hefty Rs 2,000 fine.
ISI Mark Requirement
Helmets must bear the ISI mark (Bureau of Indian Standards ISI) to comply with the law.
Failure to wear an ISI marked helmet while riding a bike or scooter could lead to a Rs 1,000 fine under Section 194D MVA of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Currently, the Delhi Police is issuing fines of Rs 1,000 for this offense. Make sure your helmet is ISI marked to avoid penalties and prioritize safety on the road.
