India resumes Visa Services in Canada for Select Categories

India’s government will give visas again to some people from Canada.

But you can only get visas for four things: coming into the country, doing business, medical reasons, and attending conferences.

During a time when India and Canada had difficulties in their relationship, India stopped providing visas to Canadians.

Will be effective from 26th October

On Wednesday, the Indian High Commission in Canada sent a message saying, “After looking at the safety situation and considering some recent actions by Canada, we have chosen to start giving visas again.”

The visa services will begin on Thursday, the 26th of October.

Jaishankar asked for this

Last Sunday, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, mentioned that if Indian diplomats in Canada are given proper protection, he would want to start giving visas again.

He explained that India stopped issuing visas to Canada because it wasn’t safe for Indian diplomats to work there and issue visas.

Starting visas again will make things less tense

This decision to resume visa services is expected to ease tensions resulting from the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, as mentioned by the High Commission.

It’s worth noting that last month, India suspended new visas for Canadians, and in response, Canada recalled 41 of its diplomats.

Trouble between India and Canada

Important to know that Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, suggested that the Indian government may have had a role in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was associated with a group known as Khalistani terrorists.

Trudeau’s national security team believed that ‘agents of the Government of India’ were involved.

However, India dismissed Canada’s accusations as unreasonable and having ulterior motives.
