Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has exciting news for Delhiites just before the festive season. Bike taxis will soon hit the streets of Delhi, but there’s a catch – they must be electric.
Kejriwal’s Move to Combat Pollution
Kejriwal recently approved the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, which is designed to regulate passenger transport
and delivery services in the capital. The scheme’s file has been sent to the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
In a historic move, Kejriwal stated, “This is a significant step in the fight against pollution in Delhi.
It makes Delhi the first state/union territory in India to mandate a time-bound conversion of commercial vehicles used by aggregators, delivery services, and e-commerce companies to zero-emission electric vehicles.”
Kejriwal also emphasized that this scheme opens the door for electric bike taxi services in Delhi, aligning with the government’s commitment to provide eco-friendly urban transport for Delhi’s residents.
A Brief History
It’s worth noting that the Delhi government had prohibited the commercial use of bike taxis in February.
The decision was made to combat pollution, leading to legal challenges from companies like Ola and Uber.
This issue eventually reached the Supreme Court, which directed the Delhi government to establish a policy for operating bike taxis in the state.
