Apple, the California-based tech giant, launched its latest iPhone 15 series on Tuesday, featuring four models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
These devices come with exciting new features and camera upgrades, along with the introduction of the USB Type-C port.
Notably, the Pro models sport a sleek titanium body. A standout feature is their integration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the inclusion of the indigenous navigation system in these new iPhone models.
ISRO’s NavIC Powers Enhanced Location Tracking
ISRO, celebrated for its Chandrayaan 3 lunar mission, has now contributed to the iPhone 15 series by integrating its GPS system, known as NavIC.
Apple has incorporated precision dual-frequency GPS (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, BeiDou, and NavIC), a digital compass, Wi-Fi cellular connectivity,
and iBeacon micro-location technology for seamless location tracking. Notably, NavIC is a creation of the ISRO team.
Understanding NavIC: India’s Indigenous Navigation System
NavIC, short for Navigation with Indian Constellation, is India’s homegrown regional navigation system.
It aims to reduce reliance on foreign navigation services and was formerly known as the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
NavIC consists of seven satellites and a 24/7 active ground station, enabling precise positioning, navigation, and location tracking.
Global Reach of NavIC
NavIC offers two services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for the public and Restricted Service (RS) for military and security applications.
Its coverage extends beyond India’s borders, reaching up to 1500 kilometers outside the country.
NavIC signals provide remarkable position accuracy (up to 20 meters) and time accuracy (up to 50 nanoseconds), compatible with other Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS, Glonass, Galileo, and BeiDou.
Why iPhone 15 Features NavIC
Despite its Indian origin, NavIC enhances global tracking as part of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).
Apple’s goal is to provide users with top-tier GPS accuracy, and hence, it equips its devices with multiple positioning and navigation signals.
Furthermore, all iPhone 15 models include a satellite tracking feature for emergency situations when a cellular network is unavailable, potentially playing a crucial role in saving lives.
