Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has introduced the Safety Rating Program, initiating efforts to ensure vehicle safety across India.
This move includes the implementation of the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP), set to roll out on October 1.
This program will assess and rate vehicles within India, making it easier for people to choose safer options when purchasing vehicles.
Cost-Effective Approach for India
The BNCAP program holds significant financial advantages for India. While approximately 2.5 crore was spent on rating vehicles abroad, the domestic implementation will cost only Rs. 65 lakhs.
This cost-effective approach aligns with the aim to encourage the use of indigenous programs.
These measures promise to simplify the process of selecting safe vehicles by assigning them star ratings ranging from 1 to 5, with 5-star ratings denoting the highest level of safety.
Modern Technology and Road Safety
Minister Gadkari emphasized the importance of road safety and the infusion of modern technology into engineering practices.
He noted that consumers desire quality vehicles rather than merely cheap options.
Car manufacturers that prioritize modern safety features are likely to experience an increase in their market share.
This commitment to safety also extends to India’s car exports, as the nation aims to attain global competitiveness in terms of both quality and pricing.
Aim for Safer Journeys
The Indian government’s move is directed towards ensuring the safety and convenience of the public.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released a draft notification outlining this initiative, seeking input from stakeholders within 30 days.
This program applies to M1 category vehicles, which can accommodate up to 8 people, including the driver.
Manufacturers are required to provide detailed vehicle information to testing agencies for rating purposes.
The assessment will be based on BNCAP protocols following AIS-197 standards, with the ratings subsequently made available on the government’s official website.
Three Pillars of Safety Rating
1. Adult Occupant Protection
2. Child Occupant Protection
3. Safety Assist Technology
Understanding Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP)
Under the BNCAP, vehicles undergo crash tests and receive scores that translate into star ratings. The highest-rated vehicles are awarded five stars.
This initiative, Bharat NCAP, fosters transparency, consumer awareness, and informed vehicle choices based on safety considerations.
