India’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Service Set to Transform Ladakh’s Transportation

Ladakh, India – A groundbreaking development is on the horizon as India prepares to launch its inaugural hydrogen fuel cell bus service in Leh.

Spearheaded by NTPC, the nation’s leading power producer, this venture promises to revolutionize eco-friendly transportation in the region.

As Ladakh strives to become carbon-neutral, this initiative marks a significant stride towards achieving this lofty environmental goal.

The deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses signals a pivotal move towards sustainability, with the first commercial test slated to navigate the high-altitude, frigid terrains of Leh’s public roads.

NTPC’s Vision for Sustainable Transport

Taking the lead, NTPC has presented the Leh government with five cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell buses designed for intra-city travel.

Complementing this fleet, a dedicated fueling station and a 1.7-MW solar facility have been established to produce clean hydrogen for bus propulsion.

Accommodating this ambitious endeavor, the government has allocated 7.5 acres of land for essential infrastructure.

Driving Force and Progress

Back in April 2020, a global call for interest was issued, leading to a collaboration with Ashok Leyland to manufacture the buses at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore per unit.

Operating expenses for hydrogen fuel cell buses will align with those of the current 9-meter diesel buses.

Originally intended for a launch on Independence Day, delays due to natural calamities have postponed the inaugural service.

Ladakh’s Carbon-Neutral Aspirations Attained

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed the visionary goal of making Ladakh carbon-neutral during his 2020 Independence Day address. Remarkably, this goal has been realized in less than two years.

Addressing the importance of Ladakh’s conservation, the Prime Minister emphasized, “Ladakh’s majestic Himalayan location demands our stewardship and guardianship.

Just as Sikkim established itself as an ‘organic state,’ Ladakh, Leh, and Kargil can proudly proclaim ‘carbon-neutral’ status.”

Reliance Industries Pioneering Hydrogen Buses

While hydrogen fuel cells remain in developmental stages for energy conversion, Reliance Industries Limited is also venturing into hydrogen-powered buses.

Public highways in India are soon to witness the integration of commercial hydrogen fuel cell buses, undergoing a unique trial at altitudes exceeding 11,500 feet, where oxygen levels are scarce.

The ultimate test awaits during winter, when Leh’s sub-zero temperatures and icy air could pose challenges.

NTPC officials credit Chairman Gurdeep Singh’s dedication to technological advancement for driving this project, financed through the SR budget.
