In a significant move, Twitter has announced its decision to impose a limit on direct messages (DM) for users with unverified accounts.
The platform’s motive behind this decision is seen as an effort to bolster the uptake of its subscription service, Twitter Blue.
By limiting DMs for unverified users, Twitter aims to curb spam messages and foster a more engaging experience for its subscribers.
The decision, made public on July 22, has sparked curiosity, though Twitter has not yet disclosed the exact limit for unverified account holders.
Push to Increase Twitter Blue Subscriptions
Twitter Blue, the company’s monthly subscription service, offers exclusive features and benefits to its paying users.
With the new limit on DMs, Twitter hopes to incentivize more users to sign up for Twitter Blue, where they can enjoy additional messaging privileges and enhanced functionalities.
Shift in Messaging Settings and Spam Reduction
Previously, Twitter introduced a direct message setting where messages sent by verified users to non-followers would be directed to a secondary ‘Message Request Inbox.’
The recent changes have brought users who previously accepted messages from anyone under the new settings.
As a result, non-subscribers are now unable to send messages to users who do not follow them. Twitter initiated testing for this feature in June 2023.
While the exact limit for unverified account DMs remains undisclosed, Twitter has claimed a remarkable 70 percent reduction in spam messages in the Direct Messages following the implementation of this new measure.
This reduction is a welcome step for users who have been contending with spam-related issues, especially after Twitter’s temporary limit on daily tweet consumption set by owner Elon Musk.
Looking Ahead
As Twitter aims to enhance its platform experience and further encourage Twitter Blue subscriptions, the future looks promising for the social media giant.
Users can expect a more tailored messaging experience, increased spam protection, and a broader range of options to customize their engagement settings on the platform.
Stay tuned for further updates as Twitter continues to innovate and refine its offerings.
