Air Passengers Rejoice: Reduced Airfares on Select Routes After GoFirst Crisis

In a welcome relief for air travelers, the recent surge in flight fares on several routes has subsided.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data reveals a decline in average airfares on 10 domestic routes, including the popular Delhi-Srinagar route.

This downward trend in airfares is expected to continue in the weeks ahead, providing respite to passengers.

The spike in airfares on specific routes was witnessed in the aftermath of the GoFirst crisis, where a shortage of aircraft and the airline’s financial turmoil led to the closure of its operations.

Taking note of the situation, the Ministry of Civil Aviation instructed aviation companies on June 6 to maintain reasonable air ticket prices.

Consequently, an analysis of airfares on a week-on-week basis until July 13 highlights a reduction in average airfares on multiple routes.

The DGCA’s fare monitoring unit collected the data, and the following 10 routes recorded a decline in airfares:

  1. Delhi-Srinagar
  2. Srinagar-Delhi
  3. Delhi-Leh
  4. Leh-Delhi
  5. Mumbai-Delhi
  6. Delhi-Mumbai
  7. Delhi-Pune
  8. Pune-Delhi
  9. Ahmedabad-Delhi
  10. Delhi-Ahmedabad

Ministry sources indicate that, with the exception of the Mumbai-Delhi route, average airfares have decreased on these identified routes.

Notably, the GoFirst crisis had led to an increase in airfares on routes serviced by the airline over the past month.

Since May 3, GoFirst flights have been suspended. During a meeting chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on June 5, representatives from airline companies were urged to exercise fare control.

With the declining trend in airfares on these routes, passengers can look forward to more affordable travel options in the near future.

As the aviation sector recovers from recent challenges, ensuring reasonable pricing remains a priority for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, offering a glimmer of hope for air travelers across the country.
