In Maharashtra, the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana, implemented by the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), aims to provide free solar pumps to farmers in areas where electricity supply by Mahavitaran is not possible.
Under this scheme, 90 to 95% subsidy is provided to farmers, with a 90% grant for the general category and a 95% grant for the SC/ST category. The scheme targets the distribution of one lakh solar pumps in the state by 2021.
Application Process and Progress: The application process for the distribution of solar pumps has commenced on May 17. Out of the target of one lakh pumps, approximately 25,000 pumps are yet to be allocated.
So far, a total of 118,898 applications have been received from across the state, out of which 99,331 applications have been scrutinized.
Among the eligible applicants, 70,529 have paid the required self-contribution amount, and 69,669 applicants have selected their solar pump suppliers. As a result, solar pumps have been installed in the fields of 56,000 farmers.
Future Plans and Distribution: The process for the next one lakh solar pumps has already begun, and applications will be called for soon.
The demand for pumps is relatively lower in districts like Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur, while the Aurangabad department has received more applications than the target.
To ensure fair distribution, pumps will be allocated based on the specific needs and objectives of each district. In areas where the number of applications is insufficient, the remaining pumps will be distributed to other districts.
Through the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana, the government aims to promote the adoption of solar energy among farmers, reduce dependence on traditional electricity supply, and support sustainable agricultural practices.
