Mahindra to launch 5-Door Thar SUV in August, setting up tough competition with Maruti Jimny

Mahindra plans to unveil the 5-door Thar off-roader SUV on Independence Day, following its tradition with the second generation Thar.

An event is scheduled in South Africa between August 15-16, 2023, fueling speculation of the 5-door Thar’s introduction at this event.

Sales and Release Timeline

Sales of the 5-door Mahindra Thar are expected to commence in the second half of this year.

The long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the current Thar will offer increased practicality and will directly compete with the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which is anticipated to launch in early June 2023.

Enhanced Space and Features

The 5-door Thar will feature a longer wheelbase, providing additional cabin space compared to its 3-door counterpart.

Spy pictures suggest the inclusion of split rear seats.

Most features will resemble the 3-door Thar, with potential updates such as an improved touchscreen infotainment system with AdrenoX software,

a sunglass holder, and a front center armrest.

Retained Design and Styling

The design and styling of the 5-door Mahindra Thar will closely resemble the three-door version, retaining the signature boxy stance with round headlamps, large wheel arches, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

However, there will be changes to the body panels, and new alloy wheels might be introduced.

Engine and Drivetrain Options

The 5-door Thar is likely to offer the same engine options as its 3-door sibling, including the 2.2L diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol engines.

Both manual and automatic transmission choices will be available, along with the option for either 4X2 or 4X4 drivetrain configurations.

Notably, the 4X2 system will be exclusive to the 2.2L diesel engine.
