FASTag charged ₹10 Extra, Vehicle Owners to get ₹8,000 Compensation

Fastag has been a convenient solution for car owners, saving them from long queues at toll plazas. However, it has been observed that at times, drivers are charged a slightly higher toll amount.

A Bangalore man took the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to the city consumer court for illegal trade practices after he was charged an excess amount at a toll plaza

While the difference is usually negligible, Santosh Kumar MB, a resident of Bangalore, decided to take action.

In a remarkable turn of events, he will now receive a compensation of Rs 8,000 in lieu of an extra Rs 10 toll deduction.

The incident occurred between February 20 and May 16, 2020, during Santosh’s highway journeys Instead of the expected toll of Rs 35, he was charged Rs 40, both during his outbound and return trips.

In light of this discrepancy, Santosh took the initiative to recover the extra amount.

Despite his efforts, NHAI officials did not provide assistance, prompting him to take the matter to the consumer court.

Santosh Kumar filed a lawsuit against NHAI, the project manager, and the toll road company’s manager.

During the course of the hearings, NHAI and JAS Company representatives failed to appear within the prescribed 45-day timeframe.

An advocate representing the NHAI argued that the deduction was in accordance with the rules, as the toll fee for cars was Rs 38, justifying the round figure of Rs 40.

However, Santosh Kumar emerged victorious as the consumer court ruled in his favor, ordering the agency to refund the excess toll charges and awarding him a compensation of Rs 8,000.

This case serves as a reminder of both the benefits and challenges associated with Fastag usage.

While it streamlines toll payments, the occasional discrepancies call for vigilance from users.

Santosh Kumar’s perseverance and legal battle with NHAI have not only resulted in compensation for himself but also highlighted the importance of fair toll pricing practices.
