New Delhi :
On Wednesday, MG Motor India introduced its newest electric car model, named Comet, at an initial price of Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most affordable electric car available in India.
Comet is the second electric vehicle model released by the company, following ZS EV, which has a starting price of Rs 23.38 lakh.
Prior to this, the title of most affordable electric car in the country was held by Tata Motors’ hatchback Tiago EV, with prices ranging from Rs 8.69 lakh to Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, all India).
MG Motor India President & Managing Director Rajeev Chaba stated in a press release that the Comet EV is not just a car,
but a symbol of their commitment to transforming the way people travel within cities.
He further added that the Comet EV is constructed using the GSEV platform,
a purely electric platform that achieved the milestone of selling one million EVs globally in the shortest period of time.
Chaba stated that MG recognizes that electric and connected vehicles are the future of transportation.
With the Comet EV, the company aims to provide customers with a stylish and convenient option, while also enabling them to make an intelligent decision.
MG Motor, a subsidiary of China’s SAIC Motor Corp, has invested approximately Rs 700 crore in the development of the Comet electric vehicle.
The vehicle will be manufactured at the company’s Halol-based plant in Gujarat.
The Comet electric car has a driving range of approximately 230 km when fully charged.
It is equipped with a 17.3 KWH lithium-ion battery and can be fully charged in about 7 hours.
The Comet electric car is a two-door hatchback that includes several features, such as automatic transmission, front airbags, and a reverse parking camera.
Due to the government’s focus on the electric segment, several automakers are introducing new models.
Maruti Suzuki is also aiming to have six electric cars in its mass segment portfolio by 2030.
